20/10 PERFECT VISION’s highly innovative femtosecond laser technology, incorporated in the FEMTEC workstation, utilizes near infrared lightwith spot sizes of just a few microns and laser pulse durations that are several magnitudes shorter than those of excimer lasers. The FEMTEC’s femtosecond laser engine is a robust and reliable all-solid-state laser which emits its pulses at very high repetition rate.

For performing surgical procedures the femtosecond laser pulses are focused into the corneal tissue. Due to high local field strengths that exceed the electric field binding electrons to their atoms, so-called plasma-mediated ablation occurs at the beam focus, generating a tiny micro-bubble. Within the femtosecond time regime, this laser-tissue interaction is characterized by a non-thermal cut with superior precision and minimal collateral effects, due to the extremely short interaction time. The ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses require lower pulse energies for ablation, thus generating smaller gas bubbles, giving surgeons full access to the benefits of ultraprecise tissue manipulation with the capability of true intrastromal ablation. This allows the use of the femtosecond laser as a versatile, precise, and minimally invasive laser scalpel.

Single ultrashort laser pulses ablate only a very small fraction oftissue. Ablation zones can be as small as one micron or less, depending on the laser parameters and the focusing scheme. Larger tissue volumes can be removed by adding the ablation effects of single ultrashort laser pulses in specific patterns. With the FEMTEC workstation, femtosecond laser technology can be utilized as a laser microkeratome, a bladeless alternative to mechanical microkeratome procedures during laser vision correction.
